Elementary Experiences

Grade 2 

Second Grade students and teachers will have the opportunity to experience a live music or dance performance as part of the Cultural Passport program. Seating is limited for each performance, so review the options below and click the Application link on the menu on the right to apply. You wil be given the opportunity to select your first, second, and third choice of performances.

Educators understand the importance of providing enough background knowledge to ensure students can fully participate and engage in all that an experience has to offer. This webpage is designed to familiarize you with the selected performers and performances and to give you access to curriculum to guide your instruction as you prepare students for the experience.

All shows taking place at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium are designed to be inclusive for individuals with and without disabilities.  The facility is accessible;  assistive listening devices, sign language interpreters and noise canceling headsets will be available.  To request materials in accessible format, and/or any other accommodation to attend this event, please contact Francine Andersen at 305-375-4634 at least five days in advance to initiate your request. About the Performance
Join MCB School Ensemble for Ballet for Young People, an interactive, behind-the-scenes look at the art of ballet. Students will learn how ballet began, what it takes to become a professional ballet dancer, and how a ballet is created. Ballet for Young People features excerpts from MCB's repertoire, including Marius Petipa’s famed fairy-tale ballet The Sleeping Beauty, featuring Puss N’ Boots, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood. George Balanchine’s Salute to the U.S.A. will also be featured, including the high-spirited Stars and Stripes with all-American costumes, sets and music, danced to the patriotic marches of John Philip Sousa.

This performance will offer accessible accommodations for individuals with Sensory Processing Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).  The theater will provide an accepting and inclusive environment, modifications to sound and lighting, noise canceling headsets, and a quiet room.

New World Symphony

About the Performance
The New World Symphony is dedicated to the artistic, personal and professional development of outstanding instrumentalists. The NWS fellowship program provides top graduates of music programs the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training. A laboratory for musical education and expression, the New World Symphony, through a wide range of performance and instructional activities, seeks to develop in participants the full complement of skills and qualifications required of twenty-first century first class musicians. Under the artistic direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, the program offers in-depth exposure to traditional and modern repertoire, with the active involvement of leading guest conductors, soloists and coaches. The relationships with these artists are extended through NWS' pioneering experimentation with distance learning via Internet2.

About the Performance
George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, the  holiday tradition that we all love is becoming even more magical this year, with an all-new production by Cuban-American artistic power couple, Isabel and Ruben Toledo. We are retiring our 27-year-old Nutcracker production to make way for new enchanting sets and costumes, while of course retaining George Balanchine’s iconic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s timeless score.
