Dance Education Special Programs
Superintendent's Dance Showcase
Miami-Dade County dance educators submit works for adjudication by dance professionals for inclusion in this annual performance showcase of student talent. Works selected are representative of the various age levels of students and technical levels of dance genres. The site of the performance changes annually to allow students and audience to experience the variety of school-site performance venues available throughout the district.
Student Choreography Showcase
Each year students in grades eight through twelve are encouraged to create new dance works and set them on themselves and other students in their dance classes. The works are adjudicated live by a panel of dance professionals who select the top three works in both general dance programs and talent magnet dance programs for inclusion in a district-wide performance. Prizes are donated by the Florida Dance Association, local studios, and dancewear merchants. A cash prize is given to the dance program whose student scores highest on adjudication criteria.
Master Classes by Visiting Artists
Working in conjunction with local arts presenting groups such as the Florida Dance Association, Florida Theatrical Association, the Broadway Series, Miami-Dade Community College, and Miami Dance Futures, Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Division of Life Skills offers master classes with dance artists who appear in major performance venues throughout the county at various times during the academic year.
Outside Agency Programs
The district contracts with local companies and presenting agencies to offer free performances both at school sites and in public theatres in order to expose students to the breadth and depth of the historical and cultural scope of dance in the world. Transporting students to local theatres during the school day to attend these performances is part of the package.
